Percival the Plain Little Caterpillar
Illustrated by Helen Brawley

Publication Date: 2001
Publisher: The Book Company Publishing
ISBN: 1740471091

Summary/Back cover:
Percival slept for a very long time. He dreamed of green and red and blue and pink and purple and yellow. And when he woke up, something wonderful had happened!

Review:
Percival is a plain little caterpillar who is jealous of all the other brightly coloured insects. On each page he talks to another insect about the colour they are, and how sad he is that he is so plain. In the end, he goes to sleep dreaming of colours and then awakes as a multi-colours beautiful butterfly. From an adults point of view, the book is quite predictable, which is a wee bit disappointing.

The illustrations in this book are quite neat, with sparkly holographic parts on each page. My 20 month old girls love looking at the pictures, and quickly learnt that they could move the book in the light to make it sparkle. Being a board book, it also is a great one for the younger ones to play with. However with the amount of text on each page and the length of the story overall, it’s hard to tell if this is a book aimed at 2 or 5 years olds.

My rating: 3 out of 5. Great for them to look at the pictures, but nothing special about the storyline.
