Summary/Back cover:
On holiday in Cornwall, the three Drew children discover an ancient map in the attic of the house that they are staying in. They know immediately that it is special. It is even more than that -- the key to finding a grail, a source of power to fight the forces of evil known as the Dark. And in searching for it themselves, the Drews put their very lives in peril.
This is the first volume of Susan Cooper's brilliant and absorbing fantasy sequence known as The Dark Is Rising.

Review:
This is the first book in the Dark Is Rising young adult sequence.

This is a sequence I wish I had known about as a younger reader, we got the movie of the second book (only one made in to a movie) out and it sparked my interest. It has been compared to the Chronicles of Narnia, often said to be more believable as it is set in the real world.

I think this book would capture the imagination of most young readers and hopefully leave them wanting to read the rest of the sequence. It is a old style good (light) vs evil (dark) battle using myths from history and bringing them in to more modern times.

4 out of 5
