Review:
This book, although classified as non-fiction, is written in a story-style, and tells the tale of a class watching a monarch caterpillar turn into a butterfly.

I got this book especially for my 3 year old who has been watching our monarchs at home, as well as a number of them at his kindergarten. He is absolutely fascinated with the caterpillar-to-chrysalis stage (which we managed to capture on video!) and the chrysalis-to-butterfly stage.

This book showed the exact same stages that we have observed on our own monarchs, so my son was able to tell me what was coming up next, before we even turned the page.

The downside of this book for us is that it is an American book, so all the butterflies flew to Mexico for the winter - I doubt that our monarch butterflies from New Zealand fly all the way to Mexico!

This is a good book showing the lifecycle of a monarch, with drawn illustrations depicting each stage well. The one thing that wasn't shown in the illustrations was the difference between male and female butterflies, which is something my son was interested in, as he's just been learning which is which as our butterflies have hatched at home.

My rating: 4 out of 5
