Book Review: Bullying In The Girl's World: A School-Wide Approach to Girl Bullying

Author: Diane Senn
Interest Level: Grades 3-8

About This Curriculum: The first step in counteracting girl bullying is to understand what it is and to become aware of how it can negatively impact the lives of young girls. Understanding and awareness bring a desire to change and make a difference, which leads to the action steps from all involved in the school environment - administration, teachers/staff, students, and parents. Action can be in the form of support, skill development, empowerment, education, or redirection. This book provides information to motivate change and the skills and strategies to make it happen.

Curriculum Includes:
  • Handouts for Administrators and Teachers
  • Teacher In-Service
  • Student Survey
  • Classroom Lessons and Strategies
  • Workshop for Parents
  • Small Group Sessions
  • Individual Counseling Activities
Why It's On My Bookshelf:  I've really enjoyed using this curriculum over the past few years. I've used it for individual students, small group, and whole classroom lessons. It really breathes the life into the messages I'm trying to get across to girls and even boys. I've tried out many different relational aggression curriculums over the years and this one is at the TOP for sure. Mine has a heavily worn cover - that's for sure! The curriculum also talked a little about texting and emailing which I appreciated as they are becoming popular relational aggression weapons. I'd like to see a curriculum (a good one mind you) focused just on cyberbullying in the future.

My Favorite Lessons From Bullying In The Girl's World:
  • What's In Your Heart - Does It Belong In Your Heart?
  • Bystander - Call To Action
  • Excluding Others vs. Appreciating and Including Others
  • Reputation Mirror
  • Friendship Betrayal vs. Honesty and Loyalty
  • Caught In the Middle
  • Save vs. Delete
  • Negative Thought Shredder
  • Ripple Effect (This one is my FAVORITE)
Again, what a great resource!
